The short answer

For a Skilled Worker visa, an IT business analyst job usually has to pay at least £54,900 a year: the going rate for SOC 2133 (IT business analysts, architects and systems designers), which is above the £41,700 general salary threshold. A new entrant can be paid from £38,400. Figures from the Home Office going-rate tables, updated 11 November 2025.

IT business analysts sit between a business and its technology teams, turning needs into requirements and checking the result does the job.

SOC 3549 Business associate professionals not elsewhere classified Temporary Shortage List

Some IT business analyst jobs are coded under SOC 3549 (business associate professionals not elsewhere classified), a medium-skilled code. This code is in Table 1a of Appendix Skilled Occupations and on the Temporary Shortage List. The Immigration Rules only count it as on the list where the application uses a certificate of sponsorship issued before 31 December 2026. Outside the list, Table 1a codes are only open to people who were granted permission as a Skilled Worker under the rules in place before 22 July 2025 and have held Skilled Worker permission ever since. On the list, this code covers only these job types: Business support officers, Business systems analysts, Contract administrators, Clinical coders, Clinical trials administrators, Research coordinators.

For a new application while the code is on the Temporary Shortage List, the standard salary rules apply: at least £41,700 for an experienced hire (the higher of £41,700 and the £33,400 going rate), or £33,400 for a new entrant. People first granted Skilled Worker permission before 4 April 2024, and continuously since, can have lower, transitional salary rules for applications made before 4 April 2030 (Appendix Skilled Worker SW 4.2, with the going rates in Table 2aa).

What the rules say for IT business analyst jobs

SOC 2133 (IT business analysts, architects and systems designers) is on the Home Office table of graduate-level occupations (RQF level 6 and above), which is open to new Skilled Worker applications.

IT business analyst and data engineer jobs share SOC 2133, so the going-rate figures and visa statistics on this page are the same as on the data engineer page. What differs is the work itself and what sponsors look for, below.

For IT business analysts, architects and systems designers (SOC 2133), the going rate of £54,900 is above the £41,700 general threshold, so the going rate is the bar for an experienced hire: at least £54,900 a year. A new entrant can be paid from £38,400.

The Home Office lists these job titles under 2133: IT business analysts; IT business analysts, architects and systems designers (other); Computer analysts and scientists; IT systems architects; IT solutions architects and designers; and Data architects.

What sponsors look for in IT business analyst hires

IT business analysts share a code with systems designers, data architects and solutions architects. The work is about systems: specifying, testing and changing them. Purely commercial analysis usually sits under a different code with a different rate.

Consultancies and in-house transformation teams at banks, insurers and retailers are frequent sponsors for this kind of role. Read the duties carefully and compare them with the occupation the employer names.

Graduate IT business analysts usually start by documenting requirements, mapping processes and testing changes. Clear writing and the ability to translate between business teams and developers are the skills interviews look for.

Rules change: always check gov.uk for the current thresholds, and when you can be paid less.
